It is critical to properly diagnosis a disc herniation prior to any treatment plan. In a current paper by Daffner, Hymanson, & Wang (2010), the authors state, "Lumbar discectomy is one of the most common spine surgical procedures. With the exception of true emergencies (eg, cauda equina syndrome), lumbar discectomy [spine surgery] is usually performed as an elective procedure after a prudent trial of nonoperative treatment" (p. 463). Cost effectiveness and safety of procedures are two important aspects of patient care.
The authors state, "…we know that, in the long term, 50% to 60% of patients will be satisfied with the results of nonoperative treatment" (Daffner et al., 2010, p. 467). Conservative spine care, including spinal manipulation in conjunction with in office and home rehabilitative exercises, has been shown to be effective. A recent review of the literature by Gaumer (2006) concluded that, "Very few patients were not satisfied with their chiropractic care. Approximately 83% of patients were very satisfied or satisfied with their care" (p. 459).
