10. Puberty:

Much like pregnancy the basis for this problem is the rise in hormones during puberty that can result in swollen gums that are more sensitive to the normal levels of bacteria in the mouth. This can lead to gum infections, gingivitis, and mouth sores, say Halpern.

He also states "But typically the gums only respond in such a manner if hygiene care is poor," he adds. So make sure you brush and floss daily, and see your dentist regularly.

11. Dry Mouth:

Saliva is nature's washing mechanism for our mouth. The lack of saliva is uncomfortable with the cheek's tendency to stick to the teeth, but the real issue is that the saliva now is unable to wash away the decay-causing bacteria and neutralize the destructive acids in the mouth.  It is not unusual to see cases of rampant decay in this condition.

Meincke says "Without saliva, you would lose your teeth much faster-it helps prevent tooth decay and other oral health problems."

There are many possible reasons for dry mouth including side effects from prescription drugs and certain medical conditions. So drink a lot of water, try sugarless gum, use fluoride toothpaste and rinse, and possibly use an over-the-counter artificial saliva substitute.

If this becomes a chronic problem you should consult with your doctor and dentist.
